Breville BOV845BSS Review – The Smart Oven Pro

After introducing the bestselling Breville BOV800XL, the company has now gone one step up and came up with the Breville BOV845BSS Smart Oven Pro convection toaster oven. You would think they have everything covered with the BOV800XL but well, there is always room to add addtional features and functions to a toaster oven to make it possible for users to cook more complex recipes. So, what’s the extra for the BOV845BSS? Let’s check out the features below.

Breville BOV845BSS Smart Oven Pro Review

Breville BOV845BSS Smart Oven Pro

The Breville BOV845BSS is very similar to the BOV800XL. It is a 1800-watt oven with Element IQ technology. There are 5 quartz elements inside the oven that moves heat to where it is needed when it is needed. The benefit of this is that food will be more evenly cooked and you should be able to get the required effect of the different cooking functions from the more advanced heating technology compared to cheaper toaster ovens. For instance, toasting will require even heat for both top and bottom. But other foods may require more to be done at the top or below. Thus, the heat needs to be able to adjust accordingly.

Notable features of the Breville BOV845BSS are:

  • 1800-watt
  • 10 cooking functions
  • LCD display
  • Slow cook function
  • Convection fan
  • Non-stick interior
  • Auto shut-off
  • Time and function control dial
  • Auto eject rack
  • Temperature conversion button
  • Defrost function
  • Pull-out crumb tray
  • Interior light
  • Size:  18.5″ (W) x 15.75 (D) x 11″ (H)

The 10 preset cooking functions are toast, bagel, bake, roast, broil, pizza, cookies, reheat, warm, and slow cook. You use the function selector dial to choose what needs to be done. The Smart Oven Pro is intuitive to use with the LCD display also showing you the time and temperature for the cooking function selected. You can change both the cooking time and temperature by using the corresponding control dial. The LCD display will also change color from blue to orange when the oven is in cooking mode.

There is also an inbuilt fan to give the toaster oven the convection feature. The fan will circulate air inside the oven to reduce cooking time. According to the manufacturer, you can speed up your cooking time by as much a 30% if you use the convection feature. The slow cook function is another extra that enables you to add a new dish to the dinner table. You won’t be able to find this function in most other toaster ovens.

The crumb tray is a pull-out drawer which is accessible from the front. For convenience, the rack is automatically ejected when the door is pulled open. A magnetic force will slide the rack out as the door opens. There is a 3-rack position inside the oven although only one wire rack is included in the package. Anyway, using two racks at the same time is not recommended as cooking performance may be affected.

The measurements for the Breville BOV845BSS Smart Oven Pro are approximately 18.5″ (W) x 15.75 (D) x 11″ (H). The interior measurements are about 13.25″ (W) x 11.25″ (D) x 5.25″ (H). It can accommodate 6 slices of bread or a 13″ pizza. It should also be able to fit most 3.5 quart Dutch oven vessels with lid. The toaster oven comes with accessories in the form of a 12″ x 12″ enamel baking pan, a 12″ x 12″ enamel broiling rack and a 13″ non-stick pizza pan.

Breville BOV845BSS vs Breville BOV800XL

The difference between the Breville BOV845BSS and Breville BOV800XL boils down to only 2 features:

  • Slow cook function
  • Interior light

The above are the two extras that the BOV845BSS possesses which the BOV800XL does not. So, that is why the former has 10 cooking functions while the latter has only 9. The slow cook function is the additional one that is missing from the BOV 800XL. You can use the slow cook to cook your food for up to 10 hours using low temperatures. You can set it on High to cook for 2 to 8 hours or Low to cook for 4 to 10 hours after which the oven will automatically turns to keep warm to keep your food ready for serving anytime.

The other missing feature in the BOV800XL is the interior light. This light is replaceable with a 25-watt G9 bulb. So, if you need to check on your food, you have the option to turn on the light with the BOV845BSS model.

Note: There is another model, the BOV810BSS Smart Oven Plus, which also has the slow cook function. But what is missing in this model is the interior light. The rest of the specifications are similar with the BOV845BSS.

Should You Buy The Breville BOV845BSS Smart Oven Pro?

  1. Breville Smart Oven ProSlow cook – The Breville Smart Oven Pro and Plus models are probably the only toaster ovens that have the slow cook function. No other models will allow you to cook up to 10 hours. The closest competitor to the Breville toaster ovens would probably be the Cuisinart ones. But even the top range Cuisinart TOB-260 doesn’t have a slow cook capability although it does have its own unique feature which is the dual cook function.
  2. Interior light – Even if you don’t have a need for a slow cook function, an interior light is still a big plus in terms of convenience. For this Breville oven, the light is set to turn on 30 seconds before your cooking time runs out which allows you to see the progress of your food and if additional time is required. So, while we have listed the BOV800XL as one of our best toaster ovens, perhaps its time to elevate the BOV845BSS to replace the former due to its additional features. Again, not many toaster ovens have an inbuilt light. The Cuisinart TOB-260 has one and so does the Oster TSSTTVMNDG but the Oster model is only a 1300-watt oven with fewer functions.
  3. Quality oven – The Amazon reviews from a long list of customers would give you a pretty good idea of what people think of this Breville oven. Most people are satisfied with its performance. Their food turns out great whether it is broiled, baked or roasted. The toast function also gives an even shade on both sides of the bread.
  4. Not complicated to use – Even old folks should have no problem cooking with this oven. The dials are there to set the function, time and temperature which are all clearly displayed on the LCD screen. You can probably even get by without the manual since the functions and settings are all neatly laid out.
  1. Price – The Breville BOV845BSS is a very pricey model. It is one of the most expensive toaster ovens on the market. However, its price is comparable to the top range Cuisinart TOB-260 and the Kitchenaid KCO273SS. At the time of writing, the Breville BOV845BSS is selling for about $265 which is about $100 more than its competition. As comparison, you can get the same 6-slice capacity Hamilton Beach Set & Forget toaster oven for only $140.
  2. Sides get hot – This is a fairly common complaint that we have seen from the various online reviews. It is typical of toaster ovens because there is no insulation for the heat that they emit. So, make sure you leave adequate space around the oven and be careful when it is in use.

If you are not sure whether you should buy the Breville BOV845BSS or the BOV800XL, bear in mind that the price difference between the two models is only about $20 at the time of this review. So, it is really a no-brainer which one you should pick since for just $20 extra, you will get an interior light and a slow cook function.

However, this Breville toaster oven is indeed expensive. It is worth it only if you are going to use it often for your cooking. If you are buying it for toasting, you are better off with a toaster. Even a high-end toaster will only cost you about $120. The premium you are paying for a Breville is for its cooking functions and performance. This is where it is worth the extra cost and where it is beating its competitors.
