Cuisinart CPT-440 Toaster Review

Cuisinart CPT_440 Touch To Toast

The Cuisinart CPT-440 is a 4-slice toaster. You can also get the 2-slice model with the same features which is the CPT-420. But at the time of writing, the difference in price between the 2 sizes is a mere $5. Of course, it boils down to your need and how much space you have on your countertop. The bigger 4-slice toaster is about 5 inches wider than the 2-slice model.

The features of the CPT-440 toaster are:

  • Stainless steel
  • Motorized lift

  • LCD countdown feature
  • Removable crumb tray
  • 7 browning levels

As mentioned above, the Cuisinart  Touch To Toast Leverless toaster starts toasting with just a press of the button. What this means is that by pressing the Toast button, the bread is automatically lowered and the toasting process begins. Hence, there is no lever to work with. The lowering and lifting up of the carriage is controlled electronically without the need of a lever.

There are 7 shades available which you can set by pressing the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ button. This is displayed on the blue backlit LED screen. Besides the normal toast function, other functions are Cancel, Bagel, Defrost and Reheat. You can press the Cancel button at any time to stop the toasting cycle and the carriage will lift up by itself. The Bagel function will toast only one side of the bread for a crispy top while the Defrost function will defrost frozen bread before toasting. The Reheat feature will warm up the bread without browing it further. The slots are about 1.5″ wide to fit most types of bread.

Once the toasting is done, the toaster will beep to signal that your bread is ready. To keep it clean, the crumb tray is removable from the bottom for easy cleaning. A countdown timer is also included in the LED display to indicate to you when your toasts will be ready.

Should You Buy The Cuisinart Touch To Toast Toaster?

Pros
  1. Independent controls – The Cuisinart CPT-440 comes with 2 independent controls with each side controlling two slots. This means you can have 2 different settings when you are toasting 4 slices of bread at the same time. This is a practical feature to have because in a household, different family members may prefer different browning levels for their toasts. So, this solves that problem by having 2 separate controls.
  2. Leverless – Many of us would have experienced problems with the lever with our past toasters. The CPT-440 has no lever to begin with as everything is controlled digitally. So, you don’t have to worry about of a mechanical breakdown of the lever. Moreover, the motorized lift is a neat feature that is only available for the Touch To Toast series for Cuisinart toasters. You can also get an auto lowering feature with the Breville BTA840XL but this one costs a lot more than the Cuisinart CPT-440.
  3. Easy to get bread out – The carriage lifts high enough to let you get your bread out easily when it is done. You don’t need prongs, even for English muffins which tend to be difficult to remove for some toasters,
  4. Countdown timer – You can watch the countdown bar on the display screen to have an indication how much time is left before the toasting is done. Only the top end toasters will have this feature like the KitchenAid KMT422CU or the Breville BTA830XL.
Cons
  1. Uneven toasting – While the majority of buyers are happy with the Cuisinart toaster’s performance, there are also complaints online from a significant number of users that their appliance doesn’t toast evenly. Some end up with their bread darker on one side than on the other while others have a portion of their bread barely toasted compared to the rest of the slice.
  2. Not dark enough – This complaint has also been raised by some buyers as the highest setting is still not enough to give the desired shade. This means that they need to toast their bread twice – once at the highest setting and the second round, at a low to medium setting to get a nicely shaded toast.

For a $85 toaster, you would expect top quality and performance from Cuisinart. But if we were to go through all the reviews online, the above complaints of problematic toasting do appear on a regular basis although they are drowned out by the big number of compliments. So, the overall rating for the Cuisinart CPT-440 Touch To Toast Leverless toaster is still fairly high and continues to attract buyers.

On the whole, the features of this Cuisinart toaster are attractive enough to want to give it a try. The price is also reasonable for the electronic features that it has. If a simple Smeg toaster can cost you $150, you would think a $85 price tag seems reasonable. After all, there are also a few Breville models with similar features that cost much more. So, if you are willing to take the risk of ending up with less than perfect toast shades, the Cuisinart CPT-440 is a cool toaster to have in the kitchen.
