Cuisinart TOB-100 Review – Compact Digital Toaster Oven Broiler

Some people do prefer digital controls than dials for their toaster ovens. Digital controls are more precise and can be easier to manipulate if they are well-designed. Dials, on the other hand, can be tight and difficult to rotate to get the right toast shade. For this Cuisinart TOB-100 review, we  will look at the various features and check out its digital controls design to see if it deserves a buy.

Cuisinart TOB-100 Review – How Many Cooking Functions Are There?

cuisinart tob-100 toaster oven

For a compact unit, it comes with more than the usual number of cooking functions. There are 7 modes altogether – toast, bagel, sandwich, bake, broil, leftover and keep warm. The toast and bagel functions allow you to choose from 7 settings from light to dark. It adjusts the toast cycle duration accordingly and the Always Even shade feature will also ensure consistent result each time. This same feature is also available for the bigger Cuisinart TOB-260.

If you choose the bagel function, the top side will be hotter than the bottom while the opposite is true for the sandwish mode. The latter will give off full heat at the bottom to toast the bread and less heat at the top to melt cheese or brown meat. In other words, different cooking functions will generate different heat level for the top and bottom elements to give you better cooking results.

Other features of the Cuisinart TOB-100 are:

  • 1400-watt
  • 2-hour timer
  • Auto shut-off
  • Start/Stop button
  • LCD digital display
  • Nonstick interior
  • Auto slide out rack
  • 2 rack positions
  • Removable crumb tray
  • Size: 15.2″ (W) x 13.1″ (D) x 8.2″ (H)

To choose the cooking function and set the time, temperature and toast shade, you use a selector dial. The Start/Stop button allows you to stop the cooking or toasting cycle at any time. So, if you find that your food is ready before the timer is up, you can conveniently stop the cooking process with just a push of a button. Similarly, you can change the cooking time, temperature and toast shade mid-cycle if necessary. The oven will register the new setting rather than stopping the cooking cycle completely to begin anew.

The LCD display has a blue backlit light. It will also flash when it is ready or pre-heating. The appliance will beep 3 times when the cooking and toasting is complete and shuts off the heat. Placing and removing your food is quick with the auto slide out rack and stains can be easily wiped away with the nonstick interior. The crumb tray can be pulled out from below the oven at the front for quick clean-up.

The exterior dimensions of the Cuisinart TOB-100 mentioned above is including the handle and bumps for the back and sides. The interior measurements are approximately 10″ (W) x 10″ (D) x 5″ (H). The rack that fits measures 9.5″ x 9.5″. It is designed to hold 4 slices of bread or a 9″ pizza.

Cuisinart TOB-100 vs TOB-40

cuisinart tob-40 custom classic toaster ovenThe Cuisinart TOB-40 is a step down to the TOB-100. The former is not a digital toaster oven and relies on 3 knobs to control the function, temperature and toast shade. However, it has a higher wattage at 1800 watts and a larger interior to fit 6 slices of bread or a 11″ pizza. The exterior dimensions are also about an inch more when it comes to the width and depth.

The price difference between the two models is about $10 with the TOB-100 being the more expensive model.

Should You Buy The Cuisinart TOB-100 Compact Digital Toaster Oven Broiler?

Pros
  1. Easy to figure out – Although digital, the design is simple to understand and use. Once a cooking mode is selected, you will have the intuition to go on and set the time and temperature or toast setting with those buttons being clearly displayed below the dial. Another toaster oven with a dial and digital display is the Breville BOV450XL. The design is slightly different but this model is equally easy to understand and use.
  2. Large LCD display – Some units have a small display panel with no backlight which makes it hard to read. The Cuisinart TOB-100 has an easy-to-read illumintated panel with pre-heating and ready read-outs. So, even if it is dark in your kitchen, you will be able to see the settings clearly. The other Cuisinart digital toaster ovens like the TOB-200 also have this similar blue backlit display.
  3. Sleek and modern-looking – The unit has a brushed stainless steel outer shell which makes it look sleek and modern. It should go well with most other appliances in a contemporary kitchen.
  4. Long timer – The timer goes up to 2 hours which is longer than most for 4-slice models. It goes in 1-minute increments until 30 minutes, followed by 5-minute increments until the 2 hours is up. The Panasonic Flash Xpress has a 25-minute timer while even the 6-slice Waring Pro TCO650 only has a 60-minute timer.
  5. Even heating – A large majority of customers have mentioned about the evenly cooked food and toasted bread. They are happy with the cooking performance of the unit. While complaints do exist about uneven toast shades, these are drowned out by the huge number of satisfied buyers.
Cons
  1. Light continues flashing – Once the cooking is complete or cancelled, the light will continue flashing for about 2 minutes before the oven goes into standby mode. Some users have deemed this to be a waste of energy as the flashing time is much longer than necessary.
  2. No convection – The Cuisinart TOB-100 has no convection heat for speedier cooking times. For that, you will have to go one step up and look at the Cuisinart TOB-135.
  3. No “Off” switch – You will have to unplug the appliance if you want to turn it off completely. If it is plugged in, it remains in dormant mode when not in use which will still draw electricity.

While this model is the best toaster oven for many, there are also some who find it too small for their needs. From the many online customer reviews, we have noticed that the size is one of the most common complaints. Therefore, bear in mind that the Cuisinart TOB-100 is a 4-slice toaster oven. If you are cooking for a family, you will need to upgrade to a bigger unit.

Overall, we think that this Cuisinart toaster oven has a good record among consumers and worth a consideration. The downside is the price which is on the high side for such a compact unit. It is cheaper than a Breville but it is still more expensive than most other brands out there. Even the larger Black & Decker CTO6335S digital convection oven sells for less. But then again, there are not many 4-slice digital toaster ovens in the market. Most digital models are for 6-slice units or larger. So, if you want a compact digital toaster oven for a small kitchen, the Cuisinart TOB-100 should feature in your list.
