The Cuisinart TOB-40 Custom Classic oven toaster has a generous size interior that can fit an 11” pizza or 4 bagel halves. For smaller sized bread, it can hold up to 6 slices. 1800-watt of power, it has 4 cooking options – toast, bagel, bake and broil. Included in the package is an oven rack, broiling rack and baking pan.

For convenience, the rack slides out automatically when the door is pulled open with the stay cool handle. This makes it convenient to load and unload food from the oven. There are also 2 rack heights to accommodate different kinds of food. The crumbs tray can be removed from the bottom without having to pull open the oven door.

To control the cooking options, temperature and toast shade settings, you will have to turn the dials on the side. The dials come with a rubberized grip. The temperature dial is used for baking and broiling while the toast shade dial will set the darkness of your toast. There is also a Start/Stop button for toasting so that you can halt the toasting mid-way when needed. The unit will sound when the toast is ready and then turns itself off automatically.

Note: Two similar models to the TOB-40 is the Cuisinart TOB-80 and TOB-100. The TOB-80 is a little smaller than the TOB-40 and not as popular. The Cuisinart TOB-100 is a step up to the TOB-40 with its digital controls and it costs about $10 to $20 more at the time of review.

Should You Buy The Cuisinart Custom Classic Oven Toaster?

Pros
  1. Toast comes out well – Most buyers are happy with the results of the toast function. The toasts do not end up too dry and dark. The shade is even and the waiting time is fast at around 1.5 minutes with its 1800-watt power.
  2. Easy toast settings – You don’t have to adjust the toast settings each time you use the oven. It will remain at the setting last used which means once you have gotten the perfect results for your toast, you don’t have to fiddle around with the dial anymore. You can also choose a setting anywhere in between Light and Medium or Medium and Dark to arrive at your preferred choice.
  3. Automatic slide out rack – The rack slides out automatically when the door is opened which means you don’t have to use a mitten to pull out a hot rack when the food is ready. Cleaning is also easy with the removable crumb tray at the bottom. Another model with an auto-eject wire rack is the Breville BOV800XL.
  4. Fair pricing – It is not the cheapest toaster oven out there but the price is fair for its brand name and quality. It is more expensive than the Black & Decker TO1303SB toaster oven but it is also slightly bigger in size.
Cons
  1. No timer – This could be a drawback for some. For example, a timer may be convenient for baking purposes but this feature is lacking in this Cuisinart unit. But if you are using it mainly for toasting, then the lack of a timer may not be a major issue with an automatic shut-off function. However, if you do need a 6-slice model with this feature, you can consider the Waring Pro TCO650 which has a 60-minute digital timer.
  2. Heating element melts – There have been quite a few complaints that the heating element melted or warped after a relatively short period of time, from a few months to a year or two of use.

The Cuisinart TOB-40 Custom Classic oven toaster does look pretty with its dark exterior finish and a small footprint on the counter top. There are about 2000 customer reviews of this product on Amazon at the time of writing which speaks of its popularity. Perhaps the affordable pricing and the Cuisinart name make it worth the risk for most people.

The good thing is when it works, it is a great toaster oven as the majority of customers have attested. The only problem is that the heating element is kind of a worry with the complaints that we have seen. Hence, we wouldn’t see the Cuisinart TOB-40 as a good buy because of it. So, unless you think it is a reasonable price to pay for less than 2 years of use, it may be preferable to look at better toaster ovens in the market.
