Frigidaire FRCN06K5NS Review – Toaster Oven With 6 Cooking Settings

Frigidaire is certainly not as well-known for toaster ovens as Cuisinart and Breville. It is more reputable for appliances such as refrigerator and dehumidifier. So, how does it fare when it comes to a small kitchen appliance like a convection toaster oven? This is what we will try to find out in this review.

The toaster oven is operated via 3 control dials. The temperature dial goes from 200°F to 450°F with markings for every 50°F increment. The middle dial is the cooking selector while the bottom dial is the timer. The timer runs to a maximum of 60 minutes. The unit does have an automatic shut-off with a bell as a signal when a cycle is completed. You can also turn it off manually to rotating the timer anti-clockwise back to ‘0’.

Inside, the walls have a nonstick coating for easy cleaning. The accessories are also dishwasher-safe. The crumb tray is removable by sliding it out from underneath the heating elements.

The rack height is adjustable with slots for 3 levels. It can fit 6 slices of bread or a 12″ pizza inside. The interior dimensions are about 12″ wide and 11″ deep with a rounded rear wall that extends out another inch to accommodate a pizza. The interior height is about 6″ from the lowest rack setting to the top heating element. The exterior dimensions are as stated above. The depth is including the door handle.

Should You Buy This Fridgidair Convection Toaster Oven?

Pros
  1. Cooks fast – The product description claims that the Frigidaire FRCN06K5NS  has close to microwave speeds with its convection rapid cooking feature. An online reviewer has tested it and managed to bake a packaged pizza faster and at a lower temperature of 375°F than the recommended setting of 425°F. The time taken was also cut down from the suggested 12 minutes to 8 minutes. So, it does cook fast which helps you to save time in the kitchen and give you a healthier option if you are worried about microwave radiation.
  2. Tray grabber – A tray grabber is included as part of the accessories. This is a convenient tool to slide out the trays and racks when they are burning hot. Not many models offer this with their toaster ovens.
  3. Operates quietly – Although you will have the fan running when it is on the convection function, the operation is fairly quiet. As far as we know, users have not reported any annoyance with the noise level generated from this unit from the various online reviews posted. The Cuisinart TOB-135 is another convection toaster oven that has a quiet fan operation.
Cons
  1. No separate toast dial – The timer works for both baking and toasting unlike the Black & Decker TO3210SSD which has a stand alone toast shade dial. Because you will need to be more precise with the time for toasting, it is hard to get consistent results each time with the Fridigaire. Sometimes, the toast will be too light while at other times, it could be too dark.
  2. Does not last – There have been a few complaints that the heating elements quit working after a few months of use. Once the heating elements do not work, the unit is rendered useless. For a unit with less of such complaints, you can take a look at the Oster TSSTTVMNDG which is another 6-slice toaster oven.
  3. Crumb tray access from inside – Although the crumb tray is removable, you would need to slide it out from the inside. A tray with a drawer like handle accessible from the front like the T Fal OT247E would have been more convenient.

We feel that this Frigidaire model is a long way off from being the best toaster oven. The risk of the heating elements failing is a worry given the price of the unit. It is not cheap for a dial-controlled toaster oven. You can get the a convection digital model of a similar size for less with the Black & Decker CTO6335S.

So, give the Frigidaire FRCN06K5NS a miss for now. Until we feel confident about the durability, we are reluctant to give this a good recommendation. There are many more models with better reviews and ratings in the market that you can get for the price of this one.
