The Oster TSSTTVXLDG extra large digital toaster oven is probably one of the largest units in its category. Most models cater to the 4 and 6-slice market. If you want anything bigger, you are pretty limited in terms of choices, especially if you are looking for a unit that can fit a family-sized pizza. This Oster toaster oven is one of the very few that could help you out if your target is an extra large capacity unit.
Oster TSSTTVXLDG Extra Large Digital Toaster Oven Review – Big But Sleek
While this a large, boxy unit, it has a brushed stainless steel exterior that makes it look sleek in a modern kitchen. A large glass door with a cool-to-touch handle at the top makes it easy to look inside to check on the cooking progress. The touch pad control further enhances its sleek appearance. If you have other stainless steel appliances in your kitchen, this would be a natural match for your existing items.

The dimensions of the Oster TSSTTVXLDG does look big but the depth of 17.5″ is including the handle which protrudes about 2″ or so. Bear in mind that there is also a bulge at the center back wall which juts out about 2″ or so to accommodate a round pizza. If you also take this into account, the depth would be about 19.5″. Inside, the dimensions are 16″ (W) x 15.5″ (D) x 10″ (H). You will have about 7″ of working space between the bottom rack to the top heating element. For an idea of what can fit inside this oven at any one time, the manufacturer has listed a 16″ pizza, 14 slices of bread or a 13″ x 9″ casserole as examples.
The keypad control panel has 7 cooking functions listed – toast, bake, convection bake, broil, warm, defrost and pizza. The pizza function has a default 20-minute timer and 400°F heat. You can change the time but not the temperature setting for this function. If a change is required, you can always switch back to the bake function. You can also use the oven to defrost meat or fish. Temperature has been set at 150°F for defrosting but time is adjustable. You can easily change both time and/or temperature for the different functions by using the arrow keys.
Other convenient features that are present include a clock and external removable crumb tray. The crumb tray slides out easily from underneath the oven door. A Stop/Cancel key enables you to stop a cooking cycle at any time while pressing the same key twice will turn off the unit. 2 rack height positions also offer flexibility for different cooking recipes.
Should You Buy The Oster TSSTTVXLDG Toaster Oven?
Pros
- Bigger than most – You probably can’t get another toaster oven bigger than this. Being able to fit a 16″ pizza or 14 slices of bread means it has enough room for a large family meal that the standard-sized units won’t be able to accommodate.
- Bakes beautifully – Most reviewers online are generally pleased with the baking results of this oven. Whether it is bread, cookies, pizzas, quiche, chickens or pies, most users find that the oven can handle the cooking well enough with fine results.
- Not too expensive – For the size, the price for the Oster TSSTTVXLDG does not seem expensive at all. Selling for about $130 at the time of review, it is more than $100 cheaper than the 6-slice Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven. Even the Panasonic NB-G110P sells for around $120 and it is only a 4-slice model.
- Straighforward controls – The keypads on the control panel are pretty self-explanatory. The functions and arrow keys for the timer and temperature are clearly listed to make the oven intuitive to operate.
Cons
- Toasting takes too long – Some users are not happy with the toasting function as it takes much longer than a traditional toaster and the results are uneven. Generally, a smaller toaster oven like the Cuisinart TOB-40 would be better for toasting compared to an extra large unit.
- Glass door shatters – There have been a few complaints that the glass door became difficult to open and close after a while and later shattered into pieces. These complaints were registered a few years back, so we would think that the flaw has been fixed. But buyers are still complaining that the door drops down onto the counter as it has no hinge to stop it from free-falling if you are not careful.
- Problem with the keypads – It can be hard to program the settings if the keypads lack sensitivity. A few customers have had to press the keypads hard or numerous times to get the instructions to register. Instead of relying solely on keypads, some models combine buttons and knobs to control the settings. The Cuisinart TOB-260 is one such example.
If you are buying this for toasting purposes, we wouldn’t think this would make a good buy. We don’t expect it to be able to toast perfectly given its size. But if you are getting it for cooking and baking meals for the family, then this might be a much more worthwhile purchase.
However, you might still want to look at a newer model to this one which is the Oster TSSTTVDGXL-SHP. This model has the same size and shares similar features with the Oster TSSTTVXLDG. The newer model seems to be even cheaper at the time of this review which may make it a more economical buy.
