T-Fal OT274E Review – Convection and Rotisserie Toaster Oven

T Fal is more well-known for its nonstick cookware but it also does have small appliances in its product line. The T Fal OT247E is one of them. It is a rotiserrie toaster oven to cater to a niche segment of the countertop oven market. But how does it fare as a toaster oven? This review below will probe further into this unit and check out its good and bad.

T-Fal OT274E Review – How Big Is It?

t fal convection and rotisserie toaster oven

The T-Fal OT274E can accommodate 6 slices of bread inside or a 12″ pizza. The interior dimensions are about 12.5″ (W) x 12″ (D) x 11″ (H). The dimensions on the outside are approximately 18″ (W) x 12.5″ (D) x 13.5″ (H). It does appear taller than most other models as the usual height measurements range from 6″ to 9″ only. The taller interior gives you more room to fit bigger-sized food so that you will have more flexibility to cook different types of food as well as bigger portions.

The rest of the features of this T-Fal countertop convection oven are:

  • 1500-watt
  • Convection heat
  • Rotisserie function
  • 120-minute timer
  • Stay on option
  • Nonstick interior
  • 8 rack heights
  • Removable crumb tray

This model has the additional rotisserie function which you would not find in a standard toaster oven. Apart from that, it also has toast, convection bake, broil and keep warm cooking options. You operate the oven using dials. At the very top, is the temperature knob which goes all the way to 460°F. Rotate the cooking functions dial below it to choose the cooking mode and then adjust the temperature accordingly. You have the flexbility to set the temperature level for all functions for more precise cooking.

The timer goes all the way to 2 hours. The toaster oven will beep when the countdown is completed and the power indicator light will automatically turn off. There is a stay on option for recipes longer than 2 hours or if you are keeping your food warm for an indefinite period.

The crumb tray can be conveniently pulled out from the front to be emptied after each use. However, it is not dishwasher-safe. Included in the package is a bake rack, bake pan and rotisserie spit as well as handle.

Should You Buy The T-Fal OT274E Rotisserie Toaster Oven?

Pros
  1. Lots of interior room – The unit is tall and hence, has a lot more room than a standard 6-slice toaster oven. It has 8 rack heights which is a lot more than the usual 2. There are 4 rack slots provided and the rack can be flipped over to give you a slight variation on the height level for each slot. It won’t be able to fit a whole turkey but it should be able to fit one small chicken with ease.
  2. Multiple layer cooking – Because of the tall interior, you can place your food on different height levels and cook them at the same time. It can certainly save time and energy this way. The Hamilton Beach 31103A is another countertop oven with this same convenience.
  3. Cooks well enough – The rotisserie function works well enough and you would have a nicely done chicken as a result. The convection bake speeds up the cooking process and frozen pizzas will come out better tasting than using a microwave. Most buyers are happy with the unit’s performance as their online reviews have shown.
Cons
  1. Lacks precision – The dials settings lack precision in the design. The temperature markings jump from 250°F to 320°F to 400°F to 460°F. As for the timer, there are 5-minute markings for the first hour only and none thereafter. For the second hour, the labels are in 20-minute increment. This makes more precise setting difficult and you will have to rely on rough estimates instead. For alternatives, you can try to look at digital models instead such as the Cuisinart TOB-200.
  2. No toast shade setting – While it can do your toast, the oven doesn’t have a dedicated toast shade dial or setting. You only  have the timer to help you out. And it is a hassle because you need to rotate the timer all the way to 120 minutes and then turn it anti-clockwise again to set a 5-minute countdown for your toast. With its design, such fine-tuning is inherently difficult with inconsistent results. So, if you want a rotisserie toaster oven with its own toast shade dial, check out the Black & Decker TO4314SSD.
  3. Temperature is off – A few customers have raised this complaint of the temperature being inaccurate. It doesn’t get as hot as expected that a longer cooking time is required.

If the appliance works perfectly, this unit does cook well enough to be able to take over most of the functions of the big oven. However, there are also many complaints coming from the buyers ranging from not being hot enough to bad rack design. Some have said that the fan and rotisserie rattle when the unit is operating while others think that the gaps along the rack slots can cause the rack to tilt when being pulled out.

Most of the complaints are indeed only minor inconveniences. However, we still think that the T-Fal OT274E stainless steel convection and rotisserie toaster oven is not a good buy. The reason being it fails as a toaster. The settings are clumsy for toasting and you may not be able to get a darker shade for your toast with the heating elements being too far away from the center. Of course, if you are not relying on this unit for your toasting, then it may be a different story. After all, the price is fairly attractive for the functions that it offers.
